Burning in Converse Basin
Burn operation to secure handline in Converse Basin: Branch Director Jack Froggat and DIVS(t) Ryan Johnston, Arrowhead IHC Supt Joe Suarez, DIVS Scott Howes. Hand ignition begins with Arrowhead Hotshots and the Cleveland NF Engine Strike Team. Arrowhead crewmember taking weather observations using a Belt Weather Kit. FBAN Brendan Ripley making fire behavior observations as the burn progresses, comparing burned to unburned and then post-burn. Arrowhead saw team prepping a giant sequoia and old sequoia stump by bucking out a downed log and limbing up another. Firing around the base of the Giant Sequoia to remove accumulated duff to prevent too much resident burning time at the base; the fire is allowed to burn, but is kept in check by the Cleveland NF Engine Strike Team using water from their hose lay. Later, the Firewatch Apache Infrared Helicopter locates several spot fires across Hwy 180 and the Cleveland NF Engines, the Arizona Strike Team, and the San Diego NWR Engine respond; DIVS(t) Ryan Johnston, STEN(t) Todd Foster; a module of Groveland Hotshots lines out to set up a grid in the green.
